Fair Format

The Selkirk Heritage Fair projects are set up on the ice surface of the St. Andrews Community Club. Activities for the students take place in the Hall of the Community Club, in the gym and some of the classrooms of St. Andrews School, in the St. Andrews Church and its cemetery, at the St. Andrews Rectory and in the St. Andrews Heritage Centre.

We would like teachers to emphasize the inquiry process and the student learning that takes place while working on their projects rather than the competitive aspect of the Heritage Fair.

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

  • We begin to set up at 12:30. Teachers can begin bringing their projects at 1:30. Some teachers have parents or EA's who bring the projects during school hours. Others come between 3:30 and 5:30 and set up their students work.
  • The projects are organized on tables by class except for the projects requiring electricity. They are in a separate section.

  • Buses pick up all of the classes to arrive at St. Andrews by 9:40.
  • Teachers can have the driver drop them at the location of their first activity.
  • Classes move from activity to activity at 30-35 minute intervals.
  • There are enough activities that you are in class groups. There are 1-2 activities where several classes are there together. i.e. Metis centres in the hall.
  • At the end of the day all of the students move to the Community Club ice surface to complete a scavenger hunt and to view one another's projects.
  • Buses leave from the Community Club parking lot.
  • At the end of the day teachers will receive Participation Certificates to give out at their school.
  • Gold, Silver and Bronze ribbons will be sent to the schools after the fair to be given out at the school.

  • We have an open house from 5:30 - 6:30 for parents and the community. All Grade 6 parents will receive a Syner Voice invitation to attend.
  • This year we are holding a "Celebration of Learning" at 6:30 where local dignitaries and school Board Senior Administration will speak. There will be no award presentations.
  • It will be announced that there will be 10 Gold ribbon projects selected by a random draw to present their projects at the Red River North Regional Library. One of the ten will be drawn to be presented at the next LSSD School Board Meeting as the Fair Ambassador.

  • Schools are expected to have someone present at the end of the evening to collect and take home projects that have not been picked up by students.
  • We are also asking teachers to mention to parents that clean up is much faster when we have extra hands.
